 2017 Preview 


       Sparta Academy finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 1-9 record.

       The Warriors lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The Warriors last playoff victory came during the 1997 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The Warriors hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 8-4 record in 2015.

       Since 2010, Sparta Academy has gone a combined 31-46. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Sparta Academy has managed to compile a record of 108-156. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class A and 27th in the AISA.

       The Warriors are led by head coach Justin Chandler who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-18 over the past three seasons at Sparta Academy. Under his direction the Warriors have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Chandler.

       Coach Chandler's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 15-18 (45.5%).

       The Sparta Academy Warriors will play in Class A region one during the 2017 season.

       This season, the Warriors will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one.

       The Warriors open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Wilcox Academy on Friday, August 25 at Wildcat Field. Last year the Wilcox Academy Wildcats finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fifth place in Class A region two. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Clarke Prep by a score of 52-0.

       Sparta Academy and Wilcox Academy have met a total of 29 times on the football field. The Warriors have a 9-18-2 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2016 with Wilcox Academy winning by a score of 28-14.

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
